Container Terminal Operator Moves from Reactive to Condition-Based Maintenance
BCT Consulting implemented IBM Maximo Application Suite in Azure, integrating 18 systems to centralise asset data and support more proactive maintenance decisions.
Client
Challenge
The operator needed to maintain high asset availability across critical port and terminal equipment while limiting unplanned failures. Traditional maintenance approaches can leave teams responding after equipment has failed or relying on fixed schedules that do not reflect actual asset condition.
Reactive repairs can increase maintenance effort and cost, disrupt operations and affect vessel turnaround and terminal productivity. The operator also lacked a single view of asset health, maintenance history and lifecycle information across its equipment and infrastructure.
Maintenance, engineering and operations teams needed better information to prioritise critical assets and plan work. Asset data, work orders, condition information and operational context had to be brought together to support decisions about repair, refurbishment and replacement.
The transformation also needed to integrate with the port’s existing operational systems and support the operator’s wider smart-port and automation objectives.

The transformation also needed to integrate with the port’s existing operational systems and support the operator’s wider smart-port and automation objectives.
Solution
BCT Consulting implemented IBM Maximo Application Suite in Azure, using Maximo Manage and Maximo Health to establish a centralised enterprise asset management platform. Maximo Mobile extended access to maintenance activities for users working across the port environment.
Maximo Manage provided asset lifecycle management, preventive maintenance, work-order management, resource planning and inventory management. Maximo Health added condition assessment and risk-based maintenance capabilities so teams could evaluate the health and criticality of assets when planning work.
The platform brought asset, maintenance and operational information together. This created a path from reactive and time-based maintenance toward condition-based and, in future, predictive maintenance, allowing maintenance teams to identify potential failures and prioritise interventions earlier.
BCT Consulting integrated the solution with 18 systems and Entra ID for authorisation. REST APIs and enterprise integrations connected Maximo with the surrounding port environment, while reporting and analytics dashboards provided visibility into asset condition, work history and maintenance activity.
The application was hosted on Azure with Red Hat OpenShift and an Azure Managed Instance for Microsoft SQL. The delivery included business process assessment, solution design, configuration, integration, testing and user adoption, with close collaboration across maintenance, engineering, operations and IT stakeholders.

Impact
The implementation established a centralised enterprise asset management platform across critical port and terminal assets. Teams gained a common view of asset condition, health, maintenance history and lifecycle information.
Standardised asset data and work-management processes improved the basis for maintenance planning and scheduling. The platform enabled condition-based decisions for critical equipment, including cranes, automated guided vehicles, electrical systems and terminal infrastructure.
The operator gained stronger asset lifecycle governance to support decisions about repair, refurbishment and replacement. Maintenance and operations teams could use shared information to prioritise work and improve visibility across the asset base.
Integration with 18 operational systems connected Maximo to the wider port environment. Reporting and dashboards supported data-driven reviews, while the platform’s cloud deployment provided a foundation for continued digitalisation and automation.
The engagement supported the operator’s move toward more proactive maintenance practices and a smart-port operating model. The supplied source does not provide quantified reductions in failures, maintenance cost or downtime, so these outcomes are presented as capability and process improvements.
