Document indexing and network search improve access to legacy technical information
BCT used Geodatafy to index more than 100 million documents across three sites, helping an independent energy producer discover technical information across network drives through text, metadata and geographic search.
Client
Challenge
The company held millions of documents across multiple network drives, with directory structures that were difficult to navigate. Files could be misplaced, renamed or left in personal folders without being captured in existing databases.
Technical information such as petrophysical models, studies, final reports and historical well data could therefore be difficult to locate. The business needed a faster way to discover files and information required for timely decisions, without relying only on file names or folder structures.

Solution
BCT used Geodatafy to index more than 100 million documents across three installation sites. The indexing process captured file names, directories and metadata, and tokenised document text when content was available for processing.
Users could search through an easy to use, embedded spreadsheet like interface using keywords and pre built filters. Tokenisation allowed searches to look inside document content, helping users find relevant information even when file names and directory names were not descriptive.
Where documents included well location geometry, users could also search geographically. Geodatafy combined its document indexer, enrichment process and text, pre built and geometric filtering services to bring network drive content into a more searchable information environment.
The solution was built on Geodatafy Core with Java, Solr, Karaf microservices and OpenAPI based REST services on the backend. The front end used Angular, Bootstrap, TypeScript and ESRI capabilities.

Impact
The client reported that document search results could be delivered 80 percent faster with Geodatafy than through the previous approach. Searches that previously took days or weeks could be completed in hours or less, enabling technical teams to reach relevant information sooner.
Geodatafy also improved discovery across network drive locations containing approximately 10 million documents in around 60 main folders and hundreds of subfolders. It helped surface legacy work and technical records that may previously have been difficult to locate, including models, studies, reports and historical well data.
By indexing document content, metadata and location information in one searchable environment, Geodatafy improved access to distributed enterprise knowledge and supported faster, more informed decisions across exploration and production activities.
