Centralised cloud mail flow preserved through a phased Exchange transition
BCT modernised the organisation’s Exchange infrastructure while preserving mail flow through Microsoft 365, supporting business continuity and a controlled path towards Exchange Server Subscription Edition.

Challenge
The organisation’s Exchange Server 2016 environment presented growing lifecycle, supportability and operational risks. It needed to move away from the legacy platform while maintaining business-critical communication and existing security controls.
The transition also had to preserve the established mail-routing architecture through Microsoft 365. Changes to the underlying Exchange platform could affect dependencies across the hybrid environment, so the team needed to validate each stage carefully and minimise disruption to users.
The customer required a controlled progression through Exchange Server 2019 towards Exchange Server Subscription Edition, together with a sustainable foundation for continued Microsoft 365 adoption.
The transition also had to preserve the established mail-routing architecture through Microsoft 365. Changes to the underlying Exchange platform could affect dependencies across the hybrid environment, so the team needed to validate each stage carefully and minimise disruption to users.

Solution
Over a four-month engagement, BCT implemented a phased modernisation approach that progressed the environment from Exchange Server 2016 through Exchange Server 2019 towards Exchange Server Subscription Edition. The team validated the environment at each stage and addressed dependencies before moving to the next phase.
Centralised mail flow through Microsoft 365 remained a core part of the design. Retaining this architecture allowed the organisation to continue using its established cloud-based messaging and security controls as the on-premises infrastructure changed.
BCT managed the work across Exchange, Microsoft 365, mail flow, security and administration as one integrated environment. Mail-routing requirements and operational dependencies were considered throughout the transition, with technical decisions guided by the need to keep email services available.
The approach also supported the customer’s longer-term cloud strategy. Modernising the on-premises Exchange layer while preserving Microsoft 365 mail flow provided a practical foundation for further messaging improvements and greater cloud adoption where appropriate.
