Root filesystem utilisation reduced from 84 to 31 percent
BCT redesigned the PostgreSQL backup lifecycle to remove redundant copies, isolate backup storage and automate validation and retention, reducing storage pressure on a business-critical production server.

Challenge
The production server’s root filesystem had reached approximately 84% utilisation. Daily database backups of around 17–19 GB were retained locally, with an additional intermediate copy created before transfer to Amazon S3. A further compression stage added temporary storage and processing requirements.
This workflow increased disk usage, avoidable input/output activity and manual cleanup effort. Continued growth raised the risk of filesystem exhaustion, backup failures and disruption to production. Adding capacity alone would leave the redundant processing and duplication unresolved.
The customer needed to reclaim capacity, simplify the backup lifecycle and strengthen validation while retaining required local and off-site backups. Better monitoring was also needed to identify abnormal database and backup conditions earlier.

Solution
During a two-month initiative, BCT analysed filesystem and directory usage, identified unnecessary older local backups and validated their removal. This recovered capacity on the root filesystem. The team then redesigned the underlying workflow to control future backup growth.
Production backups were moved to a dedicated 100 GB filesystem, separating backup storage from critical production capacity. BCT removed the intermediate local copy and unnecessary secondary compression of the PostgreSQL custom-format dump. Validated dumps could then be uploaded directly from the dedicated filesystem to Amazon S3.
The revised lifecycle covered backup creation, validation, S3 upload, verification and controlled local retention. Approximately four recent backup dates were retained locally, with required longer-term copies preserved in S3. Cleanup controls considered successful backup creation and S3 availability before reclaiming local storage.
BCT used PostgreSQL-native pg_restore inspection to check dump structural readability. During a production execution, the team validated an approximately 18.77 GB backup and confirmed that the uploaded S3 object matched the local file’s byte size. These checks provided evidence of structural readability and transfer size consistency.
Database monitoring was extended to cover CPU and disk utilisation, long-running queries, blocking sessions, backup status and other health indicators. Warning and critical thresholds helped the support team identify conditions requiring attention.
