Azure Based Replication Validated Through a Successful Disaster Recovery Drill
BCT helped the authority evaluate recovery options, implement virtual machine replication and test application functionality with customer teams and end users.
Client
Challenge
The authority needed a disaster recovery solution for applications hosted on its on-premises infrastructure. The objective was to support business continuity during crisis situations by providing a recovery approach for these applications.
The customer also needed guidance on selecting a suitable solution. Understanding the advantages, limitations and indicative costs of available options was central to choosing an approach that matched its requirements.
The customer also needed guidance on selecting a suitable solution. Understanding the advantages, limitations and indicative costs of available options was central to choosing an approach that matched its requirements.
Solution
BCT assessed three disaster recovery options: a VMware-based approach, Zerto and Azure Site Recovery. The team presented the advantages and disadvantages of each option alongside rough cost estimates, helping the authority compare suitability and cost before selecting a solution.
An Azure-based solution was implemented to replicate the authority’s on-premises virtual machines. BCT also proposed Azure Virtual Desktop for virtual desktops and Azure Files for file-server requirements as additional options.
Recovery testing involved the customer and a group of end users. A disaster recovery drill was performed to test application functionality and assess whether the recovery approach worked as intended.

Impact
The authority gained an implemented replication solution for its on-premises virtual machines. The disaster recovery drill completed successfully, with the customer and participating end users testing functionality.
The comparison of three options gave the authority a practical basis for its technology decision, combining the benefits and limitations of each approach with indicative costs. The engagement moved from evaluating recovery options to implementing and testing the selected solution in support of business continuity.
