Client

The client is the graduate medical school of Harvard University, located in the Longwood Medical Area of Boston, Massachusetts. As one of the most prestigious and research-intensive medical institutions in the world, it operates a campus of highly sensitive facilities, including laboratories, cold rooms, and warm rooms, where environmental conditions directly affect research integrity and operational continuity. Managing energy consumption and environmental parameters across 15 buildings at this level of precision is not a facilities management challenge. It is a scientific and institutional responsibility. BCT has supported this mission over a five-year engagement, contributing more than 20,000 hours of work across a dedicated team of five.

Challenge

The institution needed to move from passive monitoring to active, intelligent management of its campus environment, but the path there required solving several interconnected data and systems challenges.

Environmental data across buildings was difficult to visualize in a customized, meaningful way, limiting the ability of facility and operations teams to interpret conditions quickly and act decisively.

Solution

BCT built and delivered an Integrated Environmental Management Portal that connected OSI PI sensor data with the institution's existing IT systems, giving facility personnel a unified, intelligent view of the campus environment without disrupting how they already worked.

Seamless System Integration: Delivered an environmental management portal accessible to HMS personnel through their existing login credentials, removing friction from adoption and ensuring the solution fit naturally into daily workflows.

Multi-Building Environmental Monitoring: Processed environmental data from more than 15 buildings, monitoring cold rooms, warm rooms, and other facility types with continuous coverage across temperature, humidity, steam, chilled water, and power parameters.

Heatmap Dashboards and Deviation Alerts: Generated dashboards displaying energy consumption heatmaps across all monitored forms, with automated alerts triggered on deviations from expected parameters, giving teams immediate visibility into anomalies.

Predictive Consumption Modeling: Built individual predictive models for each building to forecast consumption of steam, chilled water, and power, using three years of historical data and separate models calibrated for summer and winter conditions.

Event-Based Notifications: Configured automated alert notifications delivered via email, ensuring that the right people were informed of deviations and demand predictions without needing to actively monitor the system.

Impact

The integration gave the institution something it had never had before: a clear, predictive, and unified view of its campus energy environment, with the intelligence to act before problems escalate.
