Client

In the oil and gas industry, companies often struggle with vast quantities of unstructured file imports and management of these files, especially when managing partner-operated well documents. These issues hinder decision-making processes and can impede the client’s ability to optimize production and comply with regulatory requirements. Our client, an oil and gas production company in the United States, faced similar problems.

Challenge

Although the client had a well-structured file hierarchy for storing partner-operated well documents, they struggled to find relevant files efficiently. The client’s import load, typically 20,000 documents per week, covered a series of topics such as governance, drilling reports, mud logs, directional survey reports, AFEs, daily reports, and others. Files are then requested by a number of internal business partners, such as Finance, Land, and Asset Management. Often these documents are requested based on geography, well name, unique well identifier, document type, creation date, or simply by keyword.
Delays in finding and distributing relevant documents to internal partners lead to delays in decision-making and reporting. They needed a solution to easily search and discover documents spatially, temporally, and/or by a simple Google-like search filter.

Solution

Bahwan cybertek deployed Geodatafy for the client, which significantly impacted their business by addressing the challenge of efficient document search and discovery. Geodatafy allowed the client to view their more than 2 million relevant documents in the partner-operated directory structure from a web-based interface with sub-second returns. Google-like text search, not only of document metadata but also of file content, gave the client insight into document relevance, regardless of file system location. In addition, our team was able to enrich the document records with well header data from their gold standard well database, making well search and document search a single effort. By enriching the documents, they inherited a spatial location based on a unique well identifier, so the client was able to spatially filter on the Geodatafy map interface. Automated jobs kept the records evergreen for access to even the most recently updated documents.

Impact
