A workshop conducted at the Raffles Hotel in Dubai entitled "Innovation in Government - Leveraging Technology for Smart Governance" met with an overwhelming response from eGovernment champions from across Federal and various emirates come together to hear Professor Mohanbir Sawhney, McCormick Tribune Professor of Technology and Director of Centre for Research in Technology & Innovation at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University.
The workshop commenced with a welcome note by H.E. Salem Khamis Al Shair, Director General of Government Information Authority, who stressed the importance of collaborating between the government and the private sector for the benefit of e-Transformation and e-Governance in the UAE.
"We are keen on having all federal government organizations attend such educative events to enhance their capacities and keep up to date with the latest developments in the fields of innovative government." Al Shair said.
Professor Sawhney who is also on the board of Bahwan CyberTek Group opened the first session with a topic "Leveraging Technology for Citizen Centric Government". He connected very well with the audience articulating the subject through simple yet powerful points like understanding Citizen-Centric Government, the need to make the shift, principles that drive this philosophy, some very interesting case studies & global best practices and actually providing steps for execution to translate vision into reality.
He stressed upon the crucial role of the Government Information Authority, to act as the facilitator and develop a single service oriented face of government while partnering with the federal ministries and eGovernment nodal agencies that represent various Emirates bringing together a common vision and framework to capitalize on the good work already done by various governmental entities in the UAE.
The Management Guru then moved on to an equally interesting and important session to touch upon "Innovation in Government" demystifying the definition of innovation, explaining the need to innovate and how to develop the culture of innovation and providing frameworks & processes to manage innovation. These were substantiated with relevant case studies and correlated with the region's culture, strengths and challenges.
The other key points that the professor touched upon were the need to foster public-private partnerships giving reference to interesting case studies like Infoline in Sultanate of Oman. He stressed the importance of developing shared services, aggregated service delivery referring to hallmark successes like Dubai eGovernment led ePay in the local context.
The session concluded with an inspiring speech by H.E. Salem Khamis Al Shair, an accomplished leader in driving eGovernment and recognized regionally for his ability to both envision and translate into execution success.
The audience were visibly thrilled that they participated in this unique event and felt that the decade old deep partnership & association between Professor Sawhney, the region and the organizers has manifested itself into this meaningful program and delivered with ease of understanding.
Bahwan CyberTek Group was represented by their Chief Operating Officer for Core Global Operations Mr. Muralidharan (Mike) and other senior management members. Business Innovation is about New Value, Not New Things
Innovation is relevant only if it creates value for customers — and therefore for the firm. Thus creating “new things” is neither necessary nor sufficient for business innovation. Customers are the ones who decide the worth of an innovation by voting with their wallets. It makes no difference how innovative a company thinks it is. What matters is whether customers will pay.
Business Innovation comes in many flavours.
Innovation can take place on any dimension of a business system. The Home Depot Inc., For example, innovated by targeting “do it yourselfers,” an underserved customer segment. JetBlue Airways Corp. has succeeded in the U.S. domestic airline market by offering a better customer experience that includes live satellite television, leather seats and fashionably clad flight attendants. And Cisco Systems Inc. has improved its margins through process innovations, such as the company's ability to close its quarterly financial accounts on the same day that its quarter ends.
Business Innovation is Systemic.
Successful business innovation requires the careful consideration of all aspects of a business. A great product with a lousy distribution channel will fail just as spectacularly as a terrific new technology that lacks a valuable end-user application. Thus, when innovating, a company must consider all dimensions of its business system.
